Acme Made Bags and iCovers
Words by Scott Dewbre
January 2004

Macs are always at the top of the list for what's cool. But how cool is it to tote that oh-so-sweet 17-inch G4 PowerBook around in the same plain, boring luggage used to schlep around those Wintel lap toasters? Not very, we say.

Fortunately, the folks at Acme Made have got us covered, literally. This brave little group of Mac fanatics has introduced a line of tote bags and monitor covers designed specially for the latest and coolest-looking Macs.

Covered with style

Acme Made's line of monitor covers, iCovers, are designed for protecting LCD monitors on the road and at home or office. The iCover comes in two basic designs - one for the Apple Studio and Cinema monitor series and one for PowerBooks and iBooks.

The Studio and Cinema monitor iCovers have a soft, padded front to protect that valuable LCD monitor's surface and a slightly elastic back with a vent screen so as not to block the monitor's cooling vents. The cover comes in a quilted platinum-tone fabric or a more rugged sueded rubber that, according to Acme Made, is highly resistant to water and abrasions. Since we weren't willing to risk trashing an Apple Studio monitor, we decided to take their word for it.

The PowerBook and iBook versions of the iCover are different from most laptop screen protectors we've seen. The iCover is a sleeve that fits around the monitor instead of lying inside the clamshell. While typical laptop screen protectors are made from plastic or rubber, this iCover uses a non-leather micro-suede that looked and felt to us a lot like the chamois material so favored by car enthusiasts for its scratch prevention. In fact, the iCover can be used as a cleaning cloth for the PowerBook or iBook display, and is washable as well, according to Acme Made.

Durable short-haul bags

In the bag department, Acme Made has created a series of bags that are a cross between a protective sleeve and a tote. The bags are heavily padded with closed-cell foam and high-impact plastic, but streamlined to allow the bag to fit into the laptop compartment of computer luggage. Add water-resistant nylon, splash-resistant zippers and a quilted lining and you have a very snug package to protect your PowerBook or iBook.

However, the Acme Made bags are as much about style as protection. The bags come in no less than 12 fabric patterns, all the way from solid black, brown, red or gold to multicolor stripes, dots and circles. It would seem that there are fashion choices in the Acme Made line to fit the corporate boardroom, the campus coffeehouse and everything in between.

Comfortable bags, convenient covers

The best way to test a bag is to travel with it, so we decided to load up our Acme Made bag and hit the road. We found out that the Acme Made bag is all about wireless computing. It has to be, because there's no room for the wires. Aside from the PowerBook itself, we managed to slide a dozen or so pieces of paper into the zippered side pouch, and that was it. Everything else - mouse, camera and even the PowerBook's power supply - had to stay home.

The bag's shoulder strap does not come with a shoulder pad; however, we found the strap to be wide enough that it didn't cut into our shoulders even after carrying it around non-stop for more than an hour. One of the benefits of a small bag, it seems, is a light load. Aside from the weight of the PowerBook itself, the bag only adds a little more than a pound to the load.

It quickly became clear to us what type of Mac user the Acme Made bags were designed for. About the longest trip we could see ourselves making with one of the bags is an hour or two, just right for running between offices for a staff meeting, or classroom lecture sessions, or to commute between home and work. This is a short-haul bag, and it fits that niche very nicely.

Bottom line

The iCovers and Acme Made Bags, all of which are constructed entirely in the United States, are stylish, durable and would make a great companion to your new PowerBook or iBook. The bags come with a lifetime warranty and a 1-year money back guarantee, while the iCovers and keyboard covers come with a 1-year warranty.
