Music on the Go

Words by Jane A. Reed
December 2005

Now that the iTunes music catalog (U.S. version) has topped 1.5 million tunes, we wondered just how many iPods would be needed to take the entire catalog with us. The European catalog contains over one million tunes focusing on European artists in addition to international gold. we discovered that 100 iPods (60GB) would be needed to take the full U.S. catalog for a ride, and 67 for the European catalog. That’s a LOT of music!

Pods can also hold photos, podcasts (over 3000 now available through iTunes), and audio books (over 11,000 and counting). We wonder how many would it take for all these, but that can wait for another day.

Three, two, one...launch!
Product launches raise hopes and anticipation levels with each new product. Some products slide quietly into the landscape while others land with a wild splash. Some of the fastest landings are listed below, in terms of speed of purchase or download. For example, when Apple announced its new podcast subscription service earlier this year, one million new subscribers were registered in just the first two days! With such excitement about a new service, let’s take a look at some of the launches of the past to see how they compare with the podcast service.
