Ashwin R. Vasavada, Mars Science Laboratory deputy project scientist, talks to MacDirectory about the upcoming exploration of Mars.
iPhone’s recent historic voyage to space sparked curiosity among MacDirectory editors concerning space exploration and its future. Coincidentally, one of NASA’s most complex space rovers is named Curiosity, and it represents the next chapter in the exploration of the planet Mars.
To answer questions such as “Is there life on Mars?” and “Will humans be able to explore Mars?” NASA created the rover Curiosity, which is scheduled to launch in late 2011 and try to perform the first precision landing on ...

Apple could buy the entire mobile industry
09/08/2011
Did you know that Apple has enough capital to buy out the entire mobile phone industry? That sounds crazy, but given the current valuations and market value of Apple’s competition, it would not be difficult for Apple to acquire every phone vendor except for Samsung with cash alone!
As the mobile market matures, will Apple start buying out its competitors in order to keep its share-holders happy? To answer this complex question, MacDirectory Publisher, Markin Abras spoke with Apple analyst Horace Dediu.
Markin Abras > Will mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and corporate restructuring be part of Apple's future business model?

Paul Kent: Inside Macworld Expo 2011
01/16/2011
Every year about this time, there is a joyful and intimate gathering of two thousand or so technological soul mates that is known as the Macworld Conference and Expo. Starting in the 80’s as a congregation of Apple enthusiasts, it grew to become an Apple-centered extravaganza whose popularity rose and fell in lockstep with Apple’s share prices. A funny thing happened after Apple and a few other large exhibitors pulled out after 2009. The Expo continued to thrive and the atmosphere and vibe of the show more resembled its heady early days as a gathering of dedicated enthusiasts. Part of the reason for this is the nature of the Mac and ...

The Sky is Not the Limit
01/03/2011
The Sky is Not the Limit for Contenders in the New Space Race.
This article is from MacDirectory's archieves.
Call them visionaries or call them crazy, but one group of ambitious rocketeers has shown that it doesn’t take a big budget to be a contender in the new race to establish private sector space travel.
“The da Vinci Project” is one of 26 teams that made a run for the $10 million ANSARI X PRIZE, which was awarded in 2005 to competitor SpaceShipOne for sending the first privately funded, piloted spacecraft capable of carrying three people to the edge of space twice within a two-week period, using the same ship. This new space ...

The Universe Revealed: Physics and Apple
12/13/2010
A closer look at the Hadron Particle Collider and Apple’s role in physics
There’s big news in the science and technology world, and it has little to do with the iPad, iPhone G4 or anything related to Apple. Instead, it has to do with gluinos, photinos, squarks and winos.
If these terms leave you scratching your head, it may well be time to put down your iPod and get a quick physics refresher.
Earlier this year, while Steve Jobs was busy introducing the iPad to the world, the largest particle collider ever built -- the Large Hadron Particle Collider (LHC) — was making even bigger news. This epic physics machine successfully began ...

Eigenlabs: This New Machine's Got Soul
11/19/2010
When was the last time that somebody created a new musical instrument? I mean, like, really new. The first thing that comes to mind is the synthesizer. Even though the technology behind creating the sound is electronic, the “user interface” dates back to the 17th century. The Theremin was patented in 1928, was unquestionably a new UI, but the instrument’s limited voice didn’t let it get far beyond movie soundtracks and a Beach Boys single. So, when you come right down to it, all of the world’s instrumental music involves hitting something, blowing into it, plucking or bowing it. In this sense, the Eigenharp is very well qualified ...

Steve Jobs jumps to 17th on Forbes Power List
11/04/2010
It's been a good year for Apple CEO Steve Jobs, but it seems like the same can be said almost every year, these days. But based on Forbes' latest "The World's Most Powerful People" rankings, it's been an especially powerful year for Jobs.
On the annual list of the 68 "people who matter, Jobs leaped from lowly 57th (fun fact: a position now held by infamous evildoer Osama bin Laden) all the way up to 17th. I assume that the promotion involves a presentation with some kind of cake.
The list, Forbes says, is a composite ranking that factors in how people "bend the world to their will," financial resources, number of "power spheres" and ...

VueScan > An Update on the World of Scanning
10/26/2010
Hamrick Software has been involved with scanning since 1998, and today has over 200,000 customers with its flagship product VueScan.
VueScan has been downloaded more than 7 million times and is the world’s most widely used program for document scanning and film scanning. It works with 1500 models of scanners, on all versions of Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The number of customers has been growing rapidly during the past 5 years, mainly due to changes in scanner technology, the transition from stand-alone scanning to multi-function printer/scanner/copiers, and the lack of support for older scanners in Windows 7 and Mac OS X.

Whether you are a Technical Writer, a Content Developer, or just someone that wants to be able to give your presentations some added punch, chances are you’ve experienced one (or more) of TechSmith’s product offerings – unless you were a Mac user.
